Top 8 Essentials for Travel & Sleep

Updated: Aug 7, 2021

Anyone else an incredibly light sleeper?

My hearing is just a little too good. So I have a floor fan and a white noise machine constantly running to drown out unpredictable loud sounds.

1. A White Noise Machine

A white noise machine is a must at home and especially when traveling on the road.

I need the sound of a real fan and not a recorded looping sound.

Although I love this more affordable option from Dohm/ Yogasleep

(affiliate link), it is terrible for traveling. The fan is made of thin metal and is easily damaged; It creates enough noise discrepancy that I can no longer use it.

If you need a machine that will stay at home, this is a great option.

If you want to risk traveling with it, I would highly recommend a travel case (affiliate link) to offer some level of protection.

The Yogasleep brand does offer a machine built for travel(affiliate link), but I believe the sounds are recorded. Something is better than nothing to arm against hotel hallway noises and neighbors.

This White Noise Sound Machine from SNOOZ (affiliate link) is what I've been using this past year. Unfortunately, I have not been able to test it out on the road yet, so I will update this post when I do. So far, I love it, and the fan looks more durable than the Dohm. It also offers an app remote to control a sleep timer and night light. The machine comes in two different colors. SNOOZ also provides a machine specifically built for travel.

2. Ear Plugs

An old coworker of mine on the road recommended these sleepbuds by Bose(affiliate link), especially during a flight. I'm not sure how necessary a case would be.. for a case.

The QuietComfort Noise Cancelling Earbuds (affiliate link) have better ratings and look like another great option.

My favorite earplugs are by Mack's (affiliate link). I've tried many different types, and these, in my opinion, so the best at blocking out sounds. I use the kid's size (affiliate link) soft moldable silicone putty. The kid's size has better ratings than the adult size. Foam earplugs tend to hurt my ears, and these do not.

3. Eye Mask

I love mulberry silk, and it is the only fabric I want to touch my face. I have several masks that I rotate out, including brands like Slip, Brooklinen, and Quince. I don't notice any significant differences, and there are more affordable options. However, I would double-check the fabric and look over a few reviews.

I have not used the Yanser brand, but it has excellent reviews and a more affordable price tag.

4. Sleep Aid

(Sleep aids should only be used as directed, and if you have questions, consult with your family physician).

Sleeps aids like melatonin and ZzzQuil are necessary for me to overcome jet lag or prevent it. Melatonin helps me feel tired and ready, while I think ZzzQuil does the best job of keeping me asleep through the night. I usually use the Vitafusion Max Strength 10mg for melatonin, and I have purchased it at least five times and ZzzQuil at least nine times on Amazon alone.

5. Lip Sleep Mask

For my dry lips, this product is a need. I recently stocked up on a great sale on the Laneige official site. If you buy on Amazon, make sure it's sold directly from Laneige (affiliate link).

6. Mulberry Silk Pillowcase

As I mentioned earlier, the only fabric I want to touch my face from now on is silk. I've become so attached to the benefits on my skin and hair that I no longer travel without at least bringing two of my pillowcases. I own several brands like Slip, Quince, and Fisher's Finery (all different price points, and no significant differences, just make sure the fabric is silk).

7. Sunrise Simulated Alarm Clock

This is a wonderful product for home use. It's so much easier to wake up as it gradually lights up the room, especially if your alarm is set before sunrise.

When I finally purchase my own home, I'd love to install motorized blackout blinds that sync to my alarm clock. But, until then, this will suffice.

I purchased the HF3520/60 (affiliate link)model back in 2015. I will warn you that it can easily scratch against other furniture. I accidentally knocked mine behind my bedframe a few times, and it suffered some battles wounds, but it still looks fine and works great. I usually keep the alarm noise on silent and use the light and the alarm from my phone.

8. Hair Sleep Cap or Hair Clip

I've learned how important it is to protect your hair while sleeping and protect your face from hair oils and products.

I use one of these clips (affiliate link) to pile my hair into a loose bun lightly.

Hair caps are great for protecting your hair from breakage and keeping hair from touching your face. On occasion, I use this cap from LilySilk (affiliate link) when I know there are many hair products in my hair. It works fine, but sometimes it slips over my eyes which I'm not a fan of, but I guess it could double as an eye mask?

I've been eyeing this cap from ZimaSilk for its great reviews and will update this post when I buy it.
